KERRY TELLS TNA TO WORK WITH GOVT.


The US Secretary of State John Kerry requested the Tamil National Alliance to cooperate with the Government towards reaching a political settlement to the Tamil question in the country.

Referring to the Special Presidential Commission chaired by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunge to find a solution to the Tamil issues, John Kerry emphasized the need for TNA to cooperate with the government to solve their problems at the meeting he had with the TNA yesterday. According to TNA Spokesperson Suresh K. Premachandran, the meeting between the US Secretary of State John Kerry and the TNA Delegation lasted nearly half an hour and John Kerry was accompanied by the US Assistant Secretary of State Nisha Biswal Desai.

"John Kerry expressing his country's support towards devolving powers, pointed out that by cooperating with the new government's initiative towards an amicable solution could be reached for the Tamil question, " Premachandran said.

The TNA while appreciating the new government's initiatives towards releasing the land areas in the North and East told the US State Secretary that the Lankan Government should expedite the process to release the land areas which have not been released yet. The necessity of expediting the resettlement process in the North and East was also pointed out to John Kerry by the TNA, according to Suresh Premachandran.

Other key issues such as the release of Tamil political detainees, and finding the missing persons were also brought to the notice of John Kerry, according to Premachandran.

Responding to the TNA Delegation, US Secretary of State John Kerry said a healthy reconciliation based on greater understanding was important to heal the wounds of the past.

He also assured that the US Government would stand by towards solving the humanitarian issues, while being supportive of a proper environment for a political solution. Northern Chief Minister C.V. Wigneswaran was also present at the meeting with John Kerry and presented him with a report on the issues, which need the attention of the US Government.

John Kerry wound up the meeting with the delegation following a phone call he received from UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon from New York.

The TNA Delegation was led by R.Sampanthan, General Secretary of the TNA Mavai S Senathiraja, Chief Minister C.V.Wigneswaran, Parliamentarians M.A.Sumanthiran, Suresh Premachnadran and Selvam Adaikalanathan.
