President peruses Budget

President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday gave the final Budget proposals the closest scrutiny prior to them being presented in Parliament this evening,

The President has also had lengthy discussions regarding the budget proposals and circumspectly examined each one of them. Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Minister of Development Strategies and International Trade Affairs Malik Samarawickrema, Governor of the Central Bank Arjuna Mahendran and Secretary to the Ministry of Finance R. M. S. Samarathunga as well as other officials participated in the discussions. Minister of Finance Ravi Karunanayake is set to present this first comprehensive annual Budget of the Maithri-Ranil Government this evening in Parliament. The debate on the Second Reading of the Budget will begin tomorrow and go on until the 2nd of December. The vote on the Second Reading is to be taken at 5.00 p.m. that evening.

The Third Reading of the budget or the Committee Stage debate will commence on 3rd December. It will continue until Saturday the 19th of December while voting will be taken at 5.00 on the 19th evening. Parliament will meet at 9.30 a.m. every day until the Budget debates are completed. The budgetary allocations of seventeen ministries which will not be taken up for discussion at the Committee Stage within the Assembly will be subject to debate during a special Committee Stage. Subsequently, a report will be submitted to Parliament and it will then be taken up for debate at the Committee stage.
