OMP gazette signed, UN, US, Canada hail move


President Maithripala Sirisena yesterday signed the gazette on the Office of Missing Persons (OMP), a move which drew praise from the international community.

“I signed the Office of Missing Persons Gazette today. This marks another step forward in Sri Lanka’s path to sustained peace,” President Sirisena tweeted.

UN Resident Coordinator Una McCauley said the OMP being gazetted is a significant step forward for the people of Sri Lanka.

The US Ambassador to Sri Lanka Atul Keshap said he was happy President Maithripala Sirisena signed the bill and gazetted the Office of Missing Persons.

He said the families waiting for answers will now hope for swiftest operationalization of the OMP.

Canada’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka Shelley Whiting said the signing of the OMP gazette by the President is a welcome and important step towards providing families of the missing with answers.
